Get ready for winter and check your boiler

Read our list of simple checks to help keep your home safe and warm this winter.

Before the colder weather arrives, now is a good time to make sure your boiler and heating are working properly. By taking a few simple steps now, you can keep your home warm, safe and well-ventilated over the coming months.

Check your heating

  • Turn your heating on and make sure your radiators are warming up.
  • Check your thermostat is working and replace batteries if needed.
  • Look out for warning lights, fault codes or leaks.
  • Make sure your carbon monoxide (CO) alarm is working.

Prepare for stormy weather

  • Secure loose items such as garden furniture, bins and plant pots.
  • Report damaged or unstable trees on Hastoe’s land via MyHastoe.
  • Let us know about damaged fences near public paths or roads via MyHastoe. If you can do so safely, prop it up or relocate it if it’s already fallen.
  • Report leaking roofs, blocked gutters or damaged drainpipes as soon as possible via MyHastoe. If you notice blocked road drains, please inform your local council.

Be ready for cold weather

  • Know where your stopcock is in case of a leak or burst pipe.
  • Keep your home heated and ventilated to help prevent damp and mould.
