What:       Official opening of Wimbish Passivhaus Scheme by Sir Alan Haselhurst MP.
Where:    Wimbish, Essex
When:     10.00am Friday 14 October 2011

Sir Alan Haselhurst MP will perform the official opening ceremony of Hastoe Housing Association’s Passivhaus development in Wimbish on 14 October 2011. Sir Alan will be joined by Michael Young, Chairman of Wimbish Parish Council and Sue Chalkley, Chief Executive of Hastoe. Following the opening Kate Barker CBE will be chairing an innovation seminar for the sector.

The development is aiming to be the first accredited rural affordable Passivhaus development in the country. With investment of £830,000 from the Homes and Communities Agency, the scheme provides 14 affordable homes for people with strong local connections.

Sue Chalkley commented: "Passivhaus is the common-sense approach to delivering well-designed, green and energy efficient homes, especially in rural areas where fuel poverty is highly significant. Having agreed to adopt the Passivhaus approach and with the enlightened support of the parish and local councils, we wanted to make sure that the development at Wimbish provided a learning opportunity not just for Hastoe, but for the affordable housing sector as a whole. We have established a microsite at www.wimbishpassivhaus.com , a visitor experience programme and will be sharing the results of our environmental monitoring of the scheme."

Councillor Michael Young said: "We made only one stipulation; that the properties be as "green" and environmentally friendly as possible. With the design of Passivhaus properties Hastoe has more than exceeded our expectations. These properties can deliver savings of more than 90% in heating bills compared to a modern conventional build. And at the same time should be affordable to many of the younger generation seeking to make their home in the village near to their parents and families."
