Affordable housing scheme in Tolpuddle officially opened

The Rt Hon Sir Oliver Letwin, MP for West Dorset, joined with Hastoe Housing Association on Friday (30 June) to officially open a development of eight new high quality, affordable homes in the village of Tolpuddle.
Also in attendance to help open the housing scheme was Cllr Tim Yarker (Portfolio for Housing, Dorset Councils Partnership), Cllr Peter Shorland (Chairman, West Dorset District Council) and Cllr Anthony Alford (Leader of Council, West Dorset District Council).

The event saw the kick off of Hastoe’s activity around Rural Housing Week (3-7 July) which highlights just how vital new housing is for people in rural areas and for the survival of their communities.

Fleur Wood Court, Tolpuddle, is a rural development of eight dwellings for affordable rent, helping to ease the local housing need by providing homes only for those with a strong local connection to Tolpuddle, Puddletown, Athelhampton or Burleston.

All homes are built to Sustainable Homes Code 4, which exceeds current building regulation standards and allows residents to benefit from lower energy costs.

The Rt Hon Sir Oliver Letwin MP said: “We need more housing of every kind in West Dorset – so it is great to see housing associations stepping up to the plate with more affordable homes.”

Hastoe Group Chief Executive Sue Chalkley said: “We’re delighted to see our housing scheme in Topuddle officially open. Hastoe takes great pride in helping rural communities thrive by building affordable, energy efficient homes for local people in perpetuity. Friday’s event was a chance for the local community and project partners to celebrate the successful opening of the scheme, which ensures that local families can stay living in and contributing to the area that they were born in, grew up in or work in.”

Cllr Tim Yarker, West Dorset District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “Providing affordable housing for local people in our villages is an essential part of our work in maintaining the vitality of the rural economy and delivering the right houses in the right place is an integral part of our Accelerating Home Building Programme. Hastoe are an invaluable partner in our quest, and this development in Tolpuddle is another example of their commitment to West Dorset’s rural housing needs.”

New Hastoe resident Sam Ling told Wessex FM that moving into his new home with his wife and young son has been lifechanging: "Living here means that we are finally able to lay some roots. It's a rent we can actually afford. It means that my son can grow up in the village and see his grandparents lots as they live just at the other end of the road."
