Staplecross Sod Turning

Hastoe Housing Association held a sod turning event on Thursday 12th July to mark the start of a much-needed affordable housing scheme in Staplecross, which is currently under development along the B2165 road (next to St Marks Church Hall).

The scheme will provide 8 high-quality, sustainable homes for local people, including 2 two-bedroom houses for shared ownership, 2 two bedroom and 4 three-bedroom houses for rent. Works on the scheme started at the end of March 2012 and are due to finish in March 2013. As a rural exception site development, priority for the homes is for local people now and in the future.

The homes are all being built to very high levels of energy efficiency and the contractor, HiLife Construction Limited is proposing to provide Photovoltaic panels to help reduce resident’s electric bills and rain water harvesting to save on water usage.

In attendance at the event were Chair, Brigette Fifield and other members of Ewhurst Parish Council, Councillor Ganly (District Councillor for Ewhurst), Councillor Bob White (Member for Darwell Ward) and Rother District Council as well as Hastoe. Cllr Ganly and Cllr White both said a few words.

Hastoe has obtained grant funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to develop the homes.

Cllr Ganley District Councillor for Ewhurst commented:
“We are very pleased for Ewhurst Parish Council and the local community who have worked hard to tackle the genuine shortage of affordable homes for local people, They can be proud that this small development will not only help meet local needs but shall maintain the sustainability of the village and survival of its services into the future.”

Janet Shields, Marketing & New Business Executive, Hilife Construction commented:

“Hilife Construction is very pleased to be the main contractor on this sustainable countryside development, our second project with Hastoe Housing Association. We hope to assist in making this another award winning development.”

Jane Gallifent, Regional Head of Development, for Hastoe South region comments:

“The event was a great success and we are looking forward to continuing the development of these homes which are very important to the local community in Staplecross. We are also grateful to the Homes and Communities Agency for the investment that helped make it possible.”
