Hastoe Wins Passivhaus Trust Award

Hastoe has won the Passivhaus Trust’s national award for the best domestic residential scheme - for Wimbish, in Essex (pictured below).

After a rigorous judging process, including a vote from each member of the trust, Hastoe housing association won the award for best domestic UK Passivhaus scheme. Hastoe was up against some big competition and received the second award by the Passivhaus trust worldwide - a major achievement.

Wimbish was Hastoe’s first Passivhaus project, built just over eleven months ago and consists of 14 homes of which 3 are Shared Ownership. The residents had agreed to allow monitoring of their homes and it was discovered that the properties scored the highest possible customer satisfaction of any other homes recorded. Residents had also reported their gas bill for both heating and hot water cost £30 for a six month period which included last winter.

Hastoe is already building another 14 homes to the Passivhaus standard in Norfolk in a bid to help prevent residents from falling into fuel poverty.

Passivhaus is the common-sense approach to delivering well-designed and energy efficient homes, especially in rural areas where fuel poverty is highly significant."

Paul Houghton, head of affordable housing for Davis Langdon, said, “Although we have a successful track record in the delivery of social housing projects with high levels of ‘code for sustainable homes’ requirements, this was the first scheme that Davis Langdon provided consultancy services on to be built to accredited Passivhaus standards. We developed an innovative procurement methodology to provide cost certainty and co-ordination of design. We believe that this scheme for Hastoe Housing has gone some way to dispel the myth that building to accredited Passivhaus standards is costly to build and difficult to achieve. Passivhaus is definitely the way forward in providing highly sustainable housing with low running costs for the residents, without the need for ‘bolt on’ technologies.”

Chris Parsons of Parson’s Whittley, the project architect, added, “We are really proud to be the recipients of the first ever UK Passivhaus award for residential buildings and it confirms our position as a leading innovator in the development of a low energy, low carbon future for the UK housing stock. I think we were successful because the scheme of 14 dwellings for Hastoe Housing Association, demonstrated that the methodology could be delivered in the mainstream housing environment at a reasonable cost. The energy use of the houses has been monitored through the UEA for 12 months and we could demonstrate really low fuel bills and really high comfort levels.”
