Hastoe Achieves Certification for Passivhaus Scheme

6 January 2012

Hastoe has achieved certification for its Passivhaus scheme, which is now the largest of its kind in England.

All of the 14 units at the site near Saffron Walden, Essex, have been certified, meaning that Wimbish is now the biggest complete Passivhaus scheme in England.

Each property has been designed to meet the necessary criteria, as defined by the Passivhaus Institute. The homes have excellent thermal insulation and are highly airtight, eliminating draughts and reducing heating energy demand.

In addition, the buildings have a controlled ventilation system which constantly provides fresh air of excellent quality and consumes a low level of electricity.

Sue Chalkley, Chief Executive of Hastoe, said:

“We are extremely proud that Wimbish has been certified as it is fantastic to have our hard work recognised. It has been a steep learning curve for us and our contractors but we believe that Passivhaus is a viable approach for affordable housing which is why we have shared our experiences with the sector.

“These homes will offer high comfort to residents throughout the year and can be heated with very little effort or cost in the winter. Our focus is on creating sustainable homes for communities in rural areas and the Wimbish scheme certainly ticks all of those boxes. We would like to offer our thanks to the HCA which has provided a great deal of funding for this project.”

Hastoe has already started work on its second Passivhaus scheme.
