Hastoe is pleased to have secured funding from the government-backed Technology Strategy Board to monitor the ongoing environmental and energy environmental performance of its Wimbish Passivhaus development.

It was one of only five domestic projects to succeed in the second round of applications to the Building Performance Evaluation Competition, which is open until 2012. The funds will enable an in-depth study to take place over 30 months so that the performance of this type of construction can be shared.

Hastoe has been supported in the application by Build with CaRe, an international project helping mainstream low carbon construction in the EU.

Ulrike Maccariello, Development Manager, Hastoe said: “We are really pleased to have had support from Build with CaRe, who have been monitoring low energy homes in the East of England since 2009.
The innovative technologies at Wimbish have a lot to offer Hastoe and other associations who are committed to reducing living costs for residents and making a positive contribution to the climate change agenda. These funds will make it easier to share the true benefit of Passivhaus principles and promote low carbon construction in housing.”

Bruce Tofield, project manager for Build with CaRe at the University of East Anglia, said: “Hastoe’s initiative to build to Passivhaus standards leads the way towards low-carbon construction in the UK. The monitoring at Wimbish will demonstrate the benefits of Passivhaus for residents not just in terms of low energy bills but also in terms of better internal air quality and well-being. We are very pleased to have been able to help Hastoe with this successful bid.”

Hastoe will be supported in project execution by Martin Ingham of Linktreat Limited; supplementary occupant behaviour studies will be undertaken by University of East Anglia researchers.

The project, currently under construction, will be the first UK affordable rural housing development to achieve Passivhaus accreditation.

The fourteen houses near Saffron Walden, Essex are a result of a strong partnership between Hastoe, Wimbish Parish Council and Uttlesford District Council. All of the homes will be reserved for people with strong local connections to area.
