Hastoe welcomes proposals to speed up the delivery of new affordable rural homes

6 April 2010

"We welcome all measures to speed up the planning process for much needed affordable rural housing and parish councils are well placed to take this forward” says Sue Chalkley, Chief Executive of Hastoe Housing Association in response to John Healey’s announcement yesterday. “This initiative will really support local leadership.”

The Housing and Planning Minister launched proposals to allow a limited number of homes to be built in rural areas without the need for individual planning applications but with the backing of the Parish Council. A full consultation will happen in the Summer.

“The social and economic benefits of providing rural communities with affordable homes for local people are clear” Sue continues. “Hastoe has worked closely with Parish Councils for over thirty years and have seen firsthand that sustainable homes help deliver sustainable communities.

The commitment and passion of Parish Councils combined with the development expertise of RSLs results in high quality, attractive homes that become a natural addition and lasting benefit to the village. The potential to reduce the long lead in period on rural schemes will encourage Parish Councils and housing associations alike.”
