Asylum seekers & refugees

If you are an asylum seeker, refugee or someone acting on their behalf, you will find the following agencies are able to offer advice and support.

National Asylum & Support Service

The Home Office has the duty to provide assistance to asylum seekers through the National Asylum Support Service (NASS). NASS support usually includes a weekly cash installment for basic essentials such as:
• Food, toiletries, and clothing
• Housing
• Help with asylum application costs (but not legal expenses)
• Maternity payments, including a milk allowance and a one-off maternity payment.

Local Authorities administer the various benefits asylum seekers are entitled to and also make provisions for temporary accommodation.

Refugee Council

The Refugee Council is the largest organisation in the UK working with asylum seekers and refugees.

Migrant Helpline

Migrant Helpline is a charity involved with providing advice and support for asylum seekers and refugees entering and living in the UK, facilitating the integration of asylum seekers and refugees into the community and promoting awareness of asylum issues.

Shelter Emergency Housing Advice Helpline

Shelter is a charity that works to alleviate the distress caused by homelessness and bad housing.
