The lack of affordable housing is the top challenge facing remote rural communities, according to new research by the Prince's Countryside Fund.

Released at the beginning of National Countryside Week, the report outlines the main challenges to the sustainability of rural communities. Affordable housing is identified as the top concern, as it is fundemental to other issue like investment in rural services, transport infrastructure, broadband, social isolation, rural poverty and the rural youth exodus.

Commenting on the report, Andrew Potter, said:

"Congratulations to the Prince’s Countryside Fund and to Professor Skerrat for producing such as comprehensive report on the challenges facing rural communities.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, respondents to the report agree that the top challenge for remote rural communities is the lack of affordable housing “because it is fundamental to everything else”.

Quality, affordable housing can make such a difference in helping to sustain rural communities and services, allowing young people to remain in the areas they grew up in. I am glad the report calls for more affordable housing as a necessity to maintain rural life.

I hope politicians and all rural groups now act on the report’s recommendations."
