MP breaks ground for new Hastoe Homes in Lavenham

South Suffolk MP, James Cartlidge, breaks ground on Hastoe's new partnership with Lavenham CLT to build 18 new affordable homes on a rural brownfield site.

James Cartlidge MP broke ground on a new Hastoe development for 18 new affordable homes in Lavenham, Suffolk.

The new homes are a joint project between Hastoe and Lavenham Community Land Trust (CLT). All the homes will be earmarked for local people, with 13 available for affordable rent, and a further five marketed for shared ownership.

The homes will be built on the brownfield site of the old council gritting depot at Melford Road. The site was purchased for just £1 by the CLT from Suffolk County Council. Now that demolition of the old site buildings has been completed, construction work can begin, with the new homes set to be completed by next summer.

The event was also attended by Hastoe Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley, as well as representatives from Lavenham CLT and Lavenham Parish Council.

James Cartlidge commented:

“There has been lots of concern in the constituency about speculative developments that endanger the character of villages due to their size, and rarely actually result in the delivery of housing. This community development is the exact opposite. It is proportionate, delivers affordable homes for local people, and has been brought about by the residents of Lavenham. I think that everyone involved should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, and I look forward to seeing the houses when they are completed.”

Sue Chalkley, Chief Executive of Hastoe Housing Association, said:

“It was great to work so closely with the local community in Lavenham to get this new development up and running. It will provide affordable homes for local people in Lavenham – now and forever.”

“It’s been a great experience, working in partnership with local people to deliver the affordable homes Lavenham needs. They will help to ensure more young families are able to remain in the village they grew up in and help the local community to thrive.”

Mr Carroll Reeve, the Chairman of Lavenham Community Land Trust, said:

"The need for affordable housing to rent, buy and live in is a common theme across the whole country. This is the start of our contribution in our village to meeting this national demand. It would not have been possible without a wide range of people and their organisations pulling together, including from our county, district and parish councils, Hastoe Housing and many others. This will continue to be a success story because they all want this development to succeed.”
