Hastoe shortlisted for Diversity Award

Hastoe has been shortlisted in the 2018 Diversity in Housing Awards.

Hastoe has been shortlisted for the Best Diversity Scheme Award at the 2018 Diversity in Housing Awards.

Hastoe’s Community Space for its Gypsy Traveller site at West Walton Court, Norfolk, caught the judges’ eye and now goes through the final Diversity in Housing Awards ceremony at Villa Park in May.

Since completion, the Community Space has had a hugely positive impact for the Gypsy Traveller Community at West Walton Court. The unit has become a hub for community services, such as Sure Start, helping to introduce children and families to the local Primary School and encourage school attendance.

It is also used by the local health trust to send health visitors to the site and engage with families and improve access to health services. Hastoe have also provided ‘Green Doctors’ clinics in the Community Space to give residents advice on heating, minimising heating costs and keeping warm during the cold winter months.

Hastoe Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley, commented:

“I am so pleased that the Community Space at West Walton Court has been shortlisted. Gypsy Traveller Communities are an integral part of rural life and this space has helped make such a difference for the Gypsy Traveller Community at West Walton Court. The community told us they needed a dedicated Community Space to increase access to local services and improve community life and it was a pleasure to deliver it.”

Hastoe’s Operations Director, Anne McLoughlin, said:

“The sad reality is that Gypsy Traveller communities are often cut off from local healthcare and education services, meaning health outcomes are poorer and education attendance lower. This scheme is helping to close this gap at West Walton Court and improve inclusion for the local Gypsy Traveller community.”

“It was a real team effort between Hastoe and the Gypsy Traveller community in making the space a reality so I am very glad it has been shortlisted. Best of luck to the Hastoe team at the awards in May.”
