Homes England visit Hastoe schemes

Representatives from Homes England visited Hastoe's schemes in the High Ongar and Hatfield Heath.

Hastoe welcomed representatives from Homes England, the Government body responsible for delivering new homes, for a tour of housing schemes in the East of England.

The tour visited Hastoe’s straw bale homes in High Ongar, opened in 2013. Insulated with straw, the homes benefit from cheaper fuel bills and a lower carbon footprint. The houses were finished with a white lime render.

The group then visited Hastoe’s scheme in Hatfield Heath. The 14 homes (13 for affordable rent and one for shared ownership) were opened in 2015 and the majority are built to PassivHaus standard, reducing the cost of heating bills to as little as £12 per month.

Homes England provided grant funding to support each of the developments and ensure the new homes could be affordable for local people. Among the group was Matthew Dodd, Homes England’s lead on Rural and Community-Led development, and Hastoe Chief Executive, Sue Chalkley.
