Hastoe is a leading innovator in sustainable development, driving high environmental standards in our new build housing. We recently achieved a bronze ranking in the inaugural Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow (SHIFT) sustainability assessment scheme.  In 2007 we completed Devon’s first rural EcoHomes Excellent scheme as part of a small and sensitive development in the village of Kenton, and in rural Essex, we piloted a new solar water-heating system at Steeple Bumpstead. We will be continuing to build on these developments by meeting and exceeding the Government's new environmental standard for new build homes, the Code for Sustainable Homes.

These successes will now be translated into the rest of Hastoe’s activities. We have developed a Greening Hastoe Policy and Strategy, which sets out Hastoe’s aspirations for achieving improved environmental sustainability across all business activities, including our existing housing stock, business premises, office processes and residents’ lifestyles. For a quick overview of our priorities and what we are trying to achieve please see the Greening Hastoe Strategy Summary.

Beyond our own activities we will also be helping the wider housing sector to become more sustainable. We have invested in our commercial subsidiary, Sustainable Homes, a national enterprise that supplies housing providers with advice, information and training on sustainable development. Please see their website for further details of the services provided.

Part of the Greening Hastoe Strategy is to provide Hastoe staff and residents with training on energy efficiency and combating fuel poverty. A workshop has been scheduled in November and December, aimed at frontline staff in housing, property services, asset management and development, is an opportunity for residents to learn more about energy efficiency, meet Hastoe staff and get involved in our sustainability strategy.

Subjects covered will be taking a closer look at energy efficiency measures, such as ground source heat pumps, and what grants and funding are available. The day will also be an opportunity for you to share your ideas and suggestions for how we can be a greener, more environmentally aware and sustainable organisation.
